Aboriginal Health (Traditional Teachings and Traditional Knowledge)

Offered through the Department of Community Health Sciences, College of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences.

What the Elective entails:

The Traditional Teachings and Traditional Knowledge Elective opportunity for medical students will provide an experiential learning opportunity to enhance the learners’ ability to engage in culturally safe approaches to medicine and healing within the Aboriginal (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) communities. 

Learning Objectives: (CanMEDS)

 

  • Describe of the spectrum of cultural teachings and ceremonies within the Anishinabe community in Manitoba.
  • Explain the role that traditional and cultural practices play in supporting physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual wellness and well-being
  • Examine the role that historical policies and legislation plays in the traditional and cultural approaches to spirituality today.

 

The learner will engage in many activities and opportunities throughout the course of the elective period that will allow the learner to meet the above noted learning objectives.

Time of when the Elective would be offered and length of elective:

This elective is available during elective periods for Canadian Medical Schools with the exception of the month of December (also subject to the availability of staff). Elective duration is a minimum of 2 weeks.

Pre-requisite for the Elective (if any i.e. Final year of medicine):

Student must be in their final year of undergraduate medicine (senior students).
