University of Hawaii Electives

NHH 545   Native Hawaiian Health

What the Elective entails:

Students spend part of their time in a clinical setting working with Native Hawaiian communities, usually at a community health center.  The other part of their time is spent shadowing a traditional healer.  Who and what depends on the site and availability.

Time of when the Elective would be offered and length of elective:

Electives are usually offered January to May.
It is available Year-round, based on availability of location, for 4 weeks, so roughly, monthly.

Pre-requisite for the Elective (if any i.e. Final year of medicine):

Students must be in the final year (senior students) of medical school

Any other additional information we should know about the elective opportunity:

There is no financial support for students here at the University of Hawaii.  they will be responsible for their own lodging, transportation and airfare.  depending on the site, limited access to lodging may be available.

Typically, the student will do a clinical rotation with a Native Hawaiian physician or a physician who works in a community with predominantly Native Hawaiian patients.  If available, student is set up with a traditional healer (this may not be available at all times or in all places throughout our state).

Student is responsible for their own housing/lodging, airfare and transportation.  If they are on the island of Oahu (Honolulu), there is a good bus system, but on any other island (and even Oahu), they will probably need a car.
