MED7210 First Australians Social and Emotional Well-being.

This subject researches the foundations of First Australians Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB )and discusses the meaning of health and wellbeing from the viewpoint of First Australians. Incompatible: 3121PBH Indigenous Health.

Course aims:

  • Provide a broad overview of the Social & Emotional Wellbeing of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
  • Provide elements of a holistic view and community wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Examine and discuss the influences of past and present that have impacted the holistic health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Introduction to social determinants and health inequalities that effect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders  everyday lives, and the role of the health professional to provide appropriate health care.
  • Opportunity to appreciate the importance of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and their delivery of culturally sensitive health services.

Learning outcomes

  • Analyse and understand the impact of their historical context on the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Identify key issues in ethical health communication with and health service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Explain the importance of the social, emotional and cultural factors pertaining to the health of Indigenous Australia.
  • Analyse Indigenous health while recognising and avoiding cultural bias when considering the social and cultural contexts of  health issues.
  • Identify the social, political and economic effects of culture on policies pertinent to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Mel Muscat is the newly appointed course convenor for the MED312 (undergraduate) and MED7210 (post-grad) First Australians Social and Emotional Well-being courses. While MED312 is a core subject, MED7210 is an elective. Currently there is no component for a clinical placement embedded into the MED 7210 course. However, as we are currently reviewing the course it may be a consideration for the future.
